  3. (08:30 Nov. 06, 2003) Audi may be tapped to build Kubang SUV for Maserati By LUCA CIFERRI | Automotive News Europe TURIN -- Audi may build Maserati's new Kubang sport-utility in Germany. Maserati senior officials confirmed to Automotive News Europe that the Italian company is currently evaluating whether to base the production of the Kubang on Audi's A8 aluminum structure. Audi would build the Kubang at its aluminum and lightweight construction center in Neckarsulm, Germany. The Kubang, which was unveiled in January at the Detroit auto show, is a radical development for Maserati, best known for its sporting coupes and GT cars. The Kubang is named after a Javan wind (taking Maserati back to its tradition of naming cars after trade winds). In early September, Audi and Maserati signed an agreement to cooperate on technical, distribution and financial service matters. Maserati knew it would have to subcontract its production of the Kubang. Its refurbished plant in Modena, Italy, is at full capacity with the current product range; the Spyder, the Coupe and the new Quattroporte sports sedan. The Modena plant has a total capacity of about 10,000 units a year, the same volume the Kubang is expected to generate. Audi would take over the complete aluminum vehicle manufacturing, receiving various components from Italy including Maserati's 4.2-liter V-8 engine. Maserati will decide by the end of the year if the Kubang will be built. The 5-door vehicle, which Maserati calls a GT wagon, has a length of 5-meters and four wheel drive. Maserati said the Kubang could go into production within 30 months of its approval.

    VW CrossFox...

VW Shows Off Its Mini Off-roader Wednesday 22nd October 2003 Head for the hills! Volkswagen is set to hit town with a funky new mini-SUV aimed at the Rover Streetwise and soon to be launched Fiat Panda 4x4. Christened the CrossFox, the chunky looking allroader will join the VW line-up positioned under the recently unveiled Polo Fun, which made its debut at last month's Frankfurt Motor Show. The launch emphasises just how quickly this niche class is growing, as manufacturers flock to join a new market created when Rover unveiled its innovative new Streetwise. It's the second urban utility vehicle that VW has unwrapped in as many months, and is expected to soon be joined by a new Golf off-roader which will offer both four-wheel drive and extra ground clearance. Based on the recently revealed Lupo replacement (Top Story, issue 775), the sensational CrossFox is expected to cost from only £8,000. Auto Express's exclusive pictures show a 100bhp 1.6-litre FSI-engined machine scheduled to hit showrooms in 2005. Although this is the only model confirmed so far by the company, further engines which are under consideration include a 75bhp 1.4-litre petrol unit, and VW's popular 115bhp 1.9-litre diesel. Five and six-speed manual gearboxes are also set to be offered. Although the front-wheel-drive car is being developed to offer the last word in urban versatility, VW's engineers are reported to be keen to ensure that it is able to perform off-road as well. Suspension is raised by 46mm, and the CrossFox will be fitted with 205/60 R15 mud and snow tyres to give ad-ded grip when the going gets rough. Extra driving lamps are also fitted, as is beefy body armour designed to protect the car's extremities. The spare wheel is fixed to the rear of the CrossFox, improving ground clearance, and adding yet more visual impact to the overall look. Finally, the car has roofbars to help carry bulky loads. Inside, leather bucket seats and metal-finished pedals will feature in the top-spec variants. The instrument cluster combines the speedometer and rev counter, while UK cars are expected to offer air-conditioning and satellite navigation, too. Internet services, provided by a removable Palm Pilot personal digital assistant, are also being planned. At the rear, there will be space for three passengers, plus a split-fold rear seat and spacious boot. VW is remaining tight-lipped over what impact the introduction of the CrossFox will have on its sister companies, SEAT and Skoda. Although the Spanish firm's small car, the Arosa, is expected to end production with the introduction of the Lupo replacement, the Czech company has shown concept models of a beefed-up, allroad edition of its Vroomster concept, also first shown at Frankfurt. The Vroomster, which is set to influence Skoda's new city car, will go on sale late in 2005. Dan Strong Article from: Auto Express

    FIAT 500...

The Fiat 500 is back Fiat is going back to its roots with an all-new Cinquecento, with funky retro styling borrowed from the enormously popular, bubble-shaped Nuova 500, of which more than three million were made between 1957 and 1975. The new model, exposed in our artist’s impression (above) was given the go-ahead in August and will appear at the Geneva show in March 2004. Though based on the Panda, it will be a distinct model with its own name, in much the same way the Citroën C2 takes the place of a more conventional C3 three-door. Fiat is designing in what it calls ‘characterisation’, similar to the recently reborn Mini and Beetle, with rounded exterior surfaces and a classy cabin finish. Although the model currently has no name, Cinquecento is the most popular choice, insiders disclose. However, Fiat could choose to revive Topolino (little mouse), the nickname given to the original front-engine/rear-drive 500C microcar. Despite its tiny 3.4m length – the same as the original Panda – Fiat claims the new car’s well-equipped cabin will have enough room for four passengers. Outside, the cheeky looks are penned entirely by Fiat Centro Stile, with strong input from design chief Umberto Rodriguez and Roberto Giolito, the man behind the Ecobasic concept of 1999. Expect a bargain-basement price tag of around £6000 when the new Cinquecento goes on sale towards the end of 2004, sharing the Panda’s engine line-up of 1.1 and 1.2 petrols, and 1.3 Multijet diesel. Another exciting opportunity offered by the reborn 500 is an all-new 500 Abarth, spiced up with sporty looks and power from the Ypsilon’s 94bhp Fire 1.4 16-valve motor, also rumoured to be bound for the range-topping Pandas next year. Following in 2007 will be an even more direct rival for the Smart City-Coupé: a new bubble-style minicar. Known internally as ‘Piccolissima’ (tiny one), the four-seater measures less than three metres long, and majors on classic Fiat principles of simplicity and economy. (Fonte: Autocar)
  10. New Saab 9-2X to debut at Los Angeles in December The Saab 9-2X — a new, all-wheel-drive, five-door model — opens up a new, fast-growing market segment for Saab and will be unveiled at a special event in Los Angeles in mid-December in conjunction with the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new, sporty Saab 9-2X continues Saab's biggest-ever product offensive by taking the Swedish manufacturer into a new market segment with a fresh expression of Saab's traditional reputation for combining fun-to-drive enjoyment and smart versatility. Positioned below the 9-3 Sport Sedan in size, the 9-2X is the first production Saab to have all-wheel drive and will offer excellent driving dynamics, in addition to turbo performance and hatchback practicality. Two versions will be available, both with five-door bodystyles and all-wheel-drive as standard. The entry level Saab 9-2X will be powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter engine and the top Aero model will feature a 227 bhp, 2.0-liter turbo unit. Its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the US was confirmed today at the Tokyo Motor Show by Peter Augustsson, President and CEO of Saab Automobile AB. “We see a rapidly emerging segment in the United States for a premium, small car below the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and we intend to be among the first in the segment,” says Augustsson. “The 9-2X will help introduce Saab to younger customer group. “ Leveraging the global resources of the GM Group. Saab Automobile AB is collaborating with Fuji Heavy Industries to create the Saab 9-2X model in cooperation with Subaru, Fuji’s automotive division. “The Saab 9-2X is the result of a collaboration between two like-minded companies. We both have a special aircraft heritage and a successful history in rallying, and our cars are known for being dynamic, safe and fun-to-drive. It makes a lot of sense to combine our strengths in creating a Saab that can be brought to market quickly.” The Saab 9-2X is scheduled to go on sale early next summer in the USA and Canada, with other markets still under consideration. It is the latest step in the most aggressive new product and concept development program in Saab’s history. Within the last two years Saab has launched the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and 9-3 Convertible ranges, as well as three concept cars: the 'four-dimensional' 9-X, the 9-3X 'Cross-over' Coupe and the 9-3 Sport-Hatch Concept, for which a production version is scheduled. General Motors owns Saab Automobile AB and holds a 20 percent stake in Fuji Heavy Industries and the Saab 9-2X program allows both companies to reach their goals by jointly leveraging the global resources of the GM Group. Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chairman for Product Development said: “The Saab and Subaru brands have a special flair. It is a natural fit for them to combine their talents and expertise in bringing the first all-wheel-drive performance car into the Saab family — a car with great dynamic qualities and exhilarating performance." The new Saab 9-2X will be produced in Fuji Heavy Industries’ facilities in Japan, beginning in the spring of 2004.

  12. Saab to Broaden Model Lineup The Daily Auto Insider Friday, September 26, 2003 Saab will add three new models over the next two years with the help of parent company General Motors, The Detroit News reported. GM will provide its "GMT360" platform, the underpinning for the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Buick Rainier SUVs, for the 9-7X, a mid-sized Saab sport-utility vehicle due on sale in early 2005. GM will also draw on Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd, which owns the Subaru brand (and which is 20 percent owned by GM) to create the Saab 9-2X, a "premium small car" based on Subaru's Impreza. The 9-2X will make its public debut at the Los Angeles auto show in January. Production is expected to begin next spring at a Fuji plant in Japan and the vehicle should be on sale in the United States by summer. Saab is also planning to intro the 9-3 Sport Hatch, which was unveiled as a concept at this month's Frankfurt auto show.
